Watauga County court records, North Carolina, can be found through several channels. WataugaCourt.us allows you to search for public information about court cases in the county. Additionally, records are available through the state court system's online services, the clerk's office in the Watauga County courthouse, and public terminals installed directly in the courthouse.

Watauga Court System & Jurisdictions

Watauga County is part of the 35th Judicial District of North Carolina. It has two levels of courts — Superior Court and District Court — each handling specific categories of cases.

Superior Court handles serious criminal cases (felonies), civil claims over $25,000, and appeals from District Court decisions.

District Court covers a much broader range of everyday cases:

  • Minor criminal offenses (misdemeanors) and traffic violations
  • Civil claims up to $25,000
  • Small claims — up to $10,000
  • Family cases: divorce, child custody, alimony, protective orders
  • Juvenile cases

Magistrates conduct initial procedures: setting bail amounts, issuing arrest warrants, and hearing small claims cases. Probate matters — wills, estate administration of deceased persons — are handled by the Superior Court clerk's office. Local rules and forms for the 35th Judicial District are published on the Watauga County Local Rules and Forms page.

Watauga Court Calendar & Upcoming Hearings

To find out what cases are scheduled for today, tomorrow, or this week, use the Watauga County page on the NC Judicial Branch website. There are separate links for civil and criminal calendars.

Search procedure:

  1. Go to the Watauga County page on nccourts.gov.
  2. Select the desired calendar type — Civil Calendars or Criminal Calendars.
  3. Find the hearing date. Calendars typically include the judge's name, courtroom number, case list, and hearing time.

You can also use the eCourts portal, which allows you to search for hearing dates by party name. The portal link is available through the Services section on the state court system's website. If the needed information is not found online, call the clerk's office directly.

How to Get a Copy of a Watauga Court Document

Court document copies come in two types — uncertified and certified. An uncertified copy is suitable for personal review. A certified copy with the clerk's seal is needed for submission to other institutions, such as for employment or in another court.

Three ways to obtain a copy:

  • In person — visit the clerk's office in the Watauga County Courthouse. The main entrance is on King Street; for those with limited mobility, an entrance is available from the rear parking lot (press the call button).
  • By mail — send a written request with the case number, party names, and document type to the clerk's office address.
  • Online — through the eCourts portal, you can view case information and, in some cases, order document copies.

For a court records request, you will need the party's full name or case number. Criminal case records are also available through public computer terminals in the courthouse. Some records have restricted access — juvenile cases, sealed cases, and cases with expungement orders are not issued.

Divorce certificates can also be ordered through NC Vital Records or at the clerk's office in the county where the divorce was filed.
